Pleasant, babbling Beaver River flows through undisturbed acres that feature a small woodland pool, streams, seeps, a bog pool and swamp, forested wetland and a mixed oak forest. Map of the Beaver River Preserve. The Beaver River is a major tributary to the Pawcatuck River. The Conservancy identified the Pawcatuck River system as one of the best examples of its type in the Lower New England ecoregion, and thus selected it as a target for conservation.
The Pawcatuck River's square mile watershed comprises most of southwestern Rhode Island and extends into Connecticut. In fact, the watershed hosts the largest and perhaps most significant cluster of known breeding sites for the globally vulnerable Ringed Boghaunter dragonfly Williamsonia lintneri across the specie's range. Beneath the Pawcatuck watershed lies an abundance of clean groundwater which serves as the sole source of drinking water for more than 60, local residents.

Some of the brown trout and brook trout sections are very technical with very clear water, lots of wood and forest cover to contend with.
The big browns and the brook trout are are wild fish and the steelhead and salmon naturally reproduce in this river. The hatches along the river can be very thick and almost daily during May and June. I have been fishing the beaver river for over 30 years and I have been teaching anglers the required methods for getting the big ones on the line in this river for over 15 years.
With the proper presentation you can catch these big brown trout during the day. For information on steelhead fishing go HERE. There are good numbers of brook trout in the upper sections and in some of the tributaries. These sections are usually small, tight and heavily forested but can be a lot of fun. For info on best gear and all the gear I use and recommend for fishing the upper beaver river and for trout go HERE. Steelheading in the lower sections can be some of the best steelhead fishing in the area at the right time and this lower section is good to fish with a fly rod, a float rod or spinning reel.
Up to 30 Steelhead a day on a fly rod is possible when the runs are at their peak but it can also be very crowded during these times. The mouth of the river has an extended fall sections up to the damn.
With only this very small section of the river open after September 31st it can be very crowded at times. It contains diverse valley lands and Niagara Escarpment topography, providing a wide range of natural habitat for flora and fauna. The Beaver River attracts many visitors to the area to enjoy the natural heritage features and to gaze at Chinook salmon climbing the fish ladder adjacent to the Highway 26 bridge at Thornbury in the autumn.
This watercourse flows north by northeast from Ceylon, through Eugenia, down the Beaver Valley through Kimberley, Heathcote and Clarksburg to a hydro dam, fish ladder and Nottawasaga Bay at Thornbury. The Beaver River is an important watercourse in the area from the point of view of recreation.
Canoeists and kayaker ply its length above the Thornbury dam and fishermen catch cold water game fish along its course. You can access the Beaver River at many points along its length, especially near the towns through which it flows.
