It is possible to add new hardware to a console with a minimal technical skill level. With a PC, the upgrades can be much more extensive. Consoles have advantages over PCs: They are easy to use, don't require upgrades, make for simple multiplayer with console-owning friends, are generally cheaper, and use wireless controllers that allow you to have a more active experience.
Many gamers choose to play with a console because they are designed for easy set up and maintenance. Console gaming can start minutes after you remove the system from the box. There are no build times or technical skills needed to start having fun. Although the relative costs of consoles and PCs are debatable, generally, consoles cost less than gaming PCs.
Plus, newer consoles can be used to stream movies, TV shows, and music — adding another perk to owning a console. Another advantage of console gaming is you can keep playing your games without worrying about hardware becoming obsolete. Unlike playing on a PC, which can require upgrades as PC games advance, consoles are built by the manufacturer with the necessary system requirements.
However, console manufacturers will release new consoles in line with improvements in technology, so there is still a risk of old consoles not being supported for new games. The amount of time between new console releases depends on the manufacturer. So, console gamers will have to consider whether to upgrade or not when the latest system is released.
Additionally, many console gamers over time will have a collection of consoles to play games across systems. The lack of backwards compatibility, or the ability to play games released for previous generation consoles on newer generation machines, does mean players are often forced to upgrade. Most of your friends have console systems, too. PC gaming historically has been credited as the best for its online multiplayer functionality.
However, consoles have since aimed to catch up with improvements with in-game communication and online game sharing, which is great for playing with friends. Before committing to a console, consider which systems offer the games you love, as not all consoles offer the same range of games. Wireless controllers allow you to be more active while playing.
Many consoles have games that increase your physical activity and skills. PCs have different advantages, including the ability to customize your PC, create hotkeys, sharper and more lifelike visuals, superior accuracy with peripherals, and greater ability to modify games. By building your own gaming PC you can choose where, when and how much you want to invest in your computer.
Some gamers invest in maintaining a very high-end computer, preferring to run the newest game releases at the highest possible settings. Others choose to invest in a budget gaming PC and upgrade only when required. Graphics Processing Unit GPU or graphics card which turns data into signals which are sent to the monitor. This data then creates the imagery or video you see on the screen. Memory RAM : where game information is stored to be loaded or retrieved quickly. Here gamers consider how much RAM they might need, the frequency at which data can be transferred and speed latency of that information.

Dragon Age is Bioware's flagship fantasy series and, whilst its flagship science fantasy series Mass Effect is inarguably better with a gamepad, the first iteration of this Baldur's Gate wannabe was certainly superior with a mouse and keyboard, due to extremely clunky controls on gamepad, and a pseudo-Infinity Engine interface.
It also looked much better on the high resolution monitor of a PC compared to the p limits of an HDTV which with the previous-gen consoles was always heavily upscaled. The second game felt like more of an action-oriented Mass Effect sequel than the first game, and the third game felt more like it wanted to be a single-player MMO like Kingdoms of Amalur, with a confusing tactical planner that only made sense with a mouse.
But they both benefitted from the PC's improved graphics punch and superior control schemes. It's just a pity that neither of them is on Steam! And again, given the weaknesses of the system, it wasn't exactly a PC killer.
The control system was equally important, given that the game involves tanks, helicopters and planes. And it has to be said that playing on PC is much easier, given the access to all forms of control — sniping is more accurate with a mouse and flying is steadier with a joystick.
And there are even more players on the servers on Battlefield 4 PC! Team Fortress' history on PC is ancient, going back to a free mod for Quake that came out in Team Fortress 2 was a rebuild of 's Team Fortress Classic mod for Half-Life but introduced cartoon graphics, comedy achievements galore, entire new game modes and something that might one day prove to be the downfall of gaming — hats.
Essentially, there were all sorts of unlockable weapons, costumes and hats even piles of hats which made the game not just tremendously fun in and of itself, but also compelling to keep playing, to get those random drops which gave you goodies — none of which were on console. It was a perfect Skinner box.
The hats tied in with the game going free which didn't happen on the consoles , which meant every PC gamer worth their salt has played it. It also inspired both the extreme DLC drive we've seen recently, the F2P games market in general on all platforms, and kept gamers playing TF right up to the present day.
Another Orange Box survivor, Portal was the core of the orangey package, but Valve was so uncertain about its reception that they kept it short and bundled two existing games along with it. I guess it shows that everybody suffers from imposter syndrome. Portal 2, meanwhile, has a mammoth amount of user-generated content through Steam Workshop, all rated and curated by the community. I suspect there's enough stuff here that you would literally never have to play another game again.
Like all the best indie efforts, Notch's survival, crafting and exploration game started on PC and it's also where the fullest version is. Divinity was originally only available on the PC but in the past few years, it has made the jump to consoles. While it's still enjoyable there, it's clear that Divinity was built to be played on the PC. It's a much better feel using a mouse and keyboard to control combat and access hotkeys.
Rockstar 's epic Western game Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the best games released in the past decade, but it was only available on consoles at first.
It has recently made the jump to PC, though we wouldn't exactly call that jump Olympic. The game suffered quite a bit when it was released on PC. Players reported a whole mess of problems like the game crashing and some were unable to even download it. Those problems have been addressed but there are still issues with it and you're better off playing the console version. We've already touched on the fact that games on PC have better graphics, and The Elder Scrolls is no different.
There's a huge amount of fan-created mods available for these games that can improve the graphics, fix various bugs, add in armor and weapons, and can even add more quests. While the console versions of Skyrim Special Edition allow for modding, it's still quite limited when compared to what you can get on a PC.
The Soulsborne series, which consists of the three Dark Souls games, Bloodborne , and Demon's Souls , has become hugely popular due in part to its challenging but rewarding difficulty. It is best enjoyed on consoles. The Soulsborne series being better on consoles highlights arguably the biggest problem with PC gaming: console exclusivity. Two games from the series are only available on console, with Bloodborne only on Playstation 4, and Demon's Souls only on Playstation 3.
Without those consoles, PC gamers are missing a chunk of the Soulsborne series. Before Overwatch , there was Team Fortress 2 , a wildly fun class-based shooter from Valve.
