There have been suggestions about too many applications running in the background, extra security, viruses etc. However I doubt this is the case I only got my laptop yesterday.

I am trying to open folders within an external hard drive, they are folders within folders ranging anywhere from 4MB to 45KB, but it the entire screen freezes up with 'not responding' in the title bar. This happens with every subsequent step of opening folders withing folders and is terribly frustrating as it takes me minutes to get to docs I have about 5 level of folders.

But it finally opens after about seconds when it really should be doing it instantaneously. The problem is also intermittent and some times you are able to reopen the folders immediately once opened but then the problem occurs again after you keep opening folders back and forth. The folders contain standard word, ppt, pdf documents albeit not the latest version of office. Again there is hardly any data on my desktop as the computer is brand spanking new.

Do you have any idea what is causing this? Opening folders is such a basic operation and to have wait so long is completely unworkable. Is this what I have to look forward to working on Vista?!
